  • HiOA - Equilibrium Interaction of Borrowing and Short-Sale Constraints and Asset Pricing
Norwegian Business School and McCombs School of Business Place Pi531 Pilestredet 35 Date and time Thursday 17 September 2015 13 00 14 00 Abstract I study how borrowing and short sale constraints interact and their joint impacts on asset pricing quantities in a dynamic general equilibrium economy with heterogeneous beliefs and risk aversions The constraints generate opposite effects on the interest rate and investors perceived market prices of risk the determinants of the stock demand and hence they bind endogenously but virtually never at the same time For intermediate values of consumption shares that balance the constraints relative strength the constraints bind intermittently one after another In the case of intermittent binding the constraints moderate the price effects of each other The volatility effects in contrast are added up and thus the volatility can be reduced to the level below that of any single constraint economy In other cases the binding of one constraint implies that the other is inactive and manifests no effects on equilibrium asset pricing properties The model also demonstrates a possibility of speculative behavior due to the existence of a speculative premium which is due to the presence of both constraints and is characterized by the
