  • HiOA - Welcome to the new university college!
will have to prioritise and strengthen the quality of both our programmes and our research activities We will continue to develop a clearly defined academic identity and a good reputation This requires academic priorities which we must collaborate on defining adds Kari And what are the long term challenges The goal of achieving university status lies in the relatively distant future in 2014 In the longer term I think the main challenges will be to maintain and further develop the quality of our study programmes and research activities within the financial constraints we have to work with At the same time we must prepare ourselves and create incentives so that the goal of increased contract activities can be realised says Ann Elisabeth In what ways will the region notice the presence of a new university college The external members of the reference group for the merger process have given us a lot of good input about the region s competence needs and about how we can get active cooperation to work better We must learn from this knowledge and incorporate it into the work that lies ahead The creation of a new joint department for public relations and communication will also actively contribute to the work to be done on reputation and profile management This is where the academic communities have to take an active role telling the outside world about what we do and what contributions we make towards developing society says the University College Director at which the Rector nods in agreement Both of them believe that if relations with the region are to be strengthened it is vital for the management to devote a lot of time to participating in social and business forums in order to establish a presence and promote further development Although our working day will often tend to be devoted to internal affairs we have been assigned a social mission and the best way to perform it is to work together with those who have a need for the education and research we provide How will the merger between the two university colleges be judged in retrospect That we became a stronger academic community where competence and innovation contributed to enhancing the quality of both our programmes and our research says Kari I hope that we will demonstrate that together we provide society with the competence it needs within our disciplinary areas in a better way than either of us could have done alone adds Ann Elisabeth They hope that the new university college will be regarded as a professional educational and research institution that delivers high quality Funding for becoming a university One question which occasionally is raised by both the boards and the civil service organisations is whether HiOA has the financial wherewithal to realise its ambition of becoming a university The University College Director believes that it does I am convinced we have the financial resources necessary for achieving university status The way the Ministry s funding model and accreditation

resources to create processes and production lines as they actually exist in industry This is where LEGO can prove to be a good alternative says Birger Brevik The pupils themselves can construct simulated automated processes instead of being told or shown how they occur This represents a leap from a theoretical blackboard to pupil approach to a practical constructive approach whereby the pupils can develop and test solutions for themselves Collaborating for better learning Since Birger s background includes a craft certificate in instrumental mechanics and experience as a vocational teacher he has first hand experience of the educational challenges that exist in the upper secondary school system He is now a PhD candidate at HiOA s Department of Vocational Teacher Education Collaboration between school and industry is a key objective in the national curriculum for vocational training programmes in the upper secondary school system Finding their own solutions The challenge is what this collaboration should consist of LEGO has taken it a step forward With the help of simple inexpensive and solid components pupils can create a simulated reality with industrial processes in a miniature format In principle the control units and functions in this format are identical to those found in industry says Birger Brevik The pupils are thus able to work on real life problems that exist in the companies find their own solutions and then take them back to the companies This gives pupils a whole new sense of ownership of projects and processes and thereby of their own learning says Birger Model with conveyor belt In his office in Kjeller Birger Brevik has a model of a worktop with a conveyor belt a sensor and a mechanical arm which at the signal of the sensor can move products on the conveyor belt further along to
