    and Lecomte I 2004 A review of 3D illumination studies Journal of Seismic Exploration 13 17 37 Illumination studies are most often applied to feasibility studies and survey design but the concept offers a wider range of applications e g during the acquisition to estimate the infill or after the acquisition to help explain acquisition related amplitude variations or shadow zones 3D model based illumination is crucial and with the increase in computer power such studies have become a common way to deal with survey design during the last ten years In this paper different methods for illumination studies are introduced and compared They are classified into two categories methods giving information over the whole target area and methods giving information at one point at a time Brink M Jones N Doherty J Vinje V and Laurain R 2004 Infill decisions using simulated migration amplitudes Expanded Abstracts SEG 74th Annual Meeting A velocity depth model from a seismic data set was used together with the P1 90 navigation data to estimate the subsurface illumination and the migration amplitudes along key horizons using NORSAR 3D These simulated migration amplitudes SMA can be generated during the acquisition to assess the need for infill shooting Laurain R Vinje V and Strand C 2004 Simulated migration amplitude for improving amplitude estimates in seismic illumination studies The Leading Edge Volume 23 Issue 3 p 240 When an amplitude variation is encountered in the seismic data determining which factor survey geometry instrumentation filtering and muting of prestack data migration artifacts focusing defocussing wave attenuation in the overburden etc is responsible is not easy In this paper the authors apply a method based on the combination of 3D seismic ray modeling and simulation of migration that is able to distinguish between some factors contributing to the amplitudes This will reduce the risk of interpretating false anomalies and drilling dry wells The method presented in Vinje 2001 is an extension of work proposed by Schneider and Winbow 1999 Laurain R Vinje V and Strand C 2003 Simulated migration amplitude Modeling amplitude anomalies of PSDM in a real North Sea case Expanded Abstracts SEG 73rd Annual Meeting 917 920 The Simulated Migration Amplitude SMA is a ray based Target orientated Kirchoff migration of synthetic data around the reflection points using the local paraxial approximation of the two way traveltime field on the target horizon Compared to conventional migration of synthetic data the method if computationally efficient making it for example suitable for survey planning as the amplitude response of several configurations can be compared in a reasonable amount of time On a real case provided by PGS the results of the method have been compared with the results from PSDM Amplitudes from PSDM and Simulated Migration show clear similarities Gjøystdal H Iversen E Laurain L Lecomte I Vinje V and Åstebøl K 2002 Review of ray theory applications in modelling and imaging of seismic data Studia geophysica et geodaetica 46 113 164 Throughout the last twenty years 3D seismic
