  • Big bird | South Pole 1911-2011
Antarctic Logistics and Expeditions This huge bird was designed to carry a payload of 40 tonnes During the war in Afghanistan 1979 1991 il 76 aircraft transported 786 000 people and 315 800 tonnes of supplies Nowadays other countries including China also fly this aircraft It is still used for various transport missions during demanding field operations in war zones but is increasingly being put to civilian use to meet challenges posed by natural disasters and for relief work The plane is robust and can land without a proper runway an all terrain vehicle of the sky Our crew is from Russia They are highly experienced and have flown to and from Antarctica over several summer seasons The flying time from Punta Arenas to Union Glacier in Antarctica is just under four hours That means the flight has no point of no return beyond which a dwindling fuel supply forces the crew to fly onward regardless of weather conditions at their destination The short flight increases our safety margin and that is perfectly okay with us Our gear has been loaded onto the plane On Friday evening a Twin Otter and a Basler BT 67 a modification of the more

  • Details, details | South Pole 1911-2011
informed that everything had arrived safely Not a single ski pole had been damaged But nevertheless we struggle against gnawing uncertainty about whether we have remembered everything This is definitely not the kind of excursion where you can forget to pack stuff it s a long way to the nearest shop Today we went through all our gear once again and obviously we spotted a few little problems Tomorrow we load the plane so we have no time to lose Vegard and Harald Dag rush off to a shop that carries electronic gadgets and buy a few spare connectors for our solar panels Our contact with the outside world literally hangs by a thread by a wire anyway and the connectors simply must function despite the severe cold At the other end of the spectrum Stein and Jan Gunnar head for the local supermarket and purchase sixteen rolls of toilet paper and some extra salami to stash away in the depots Suddenly we spot a mathematical error that affects the number of screws we need for our sleds The door of the nearest hardware store is flung open and breathless Norwegian customers march in But when we leave the warehouse

  • Punta Arenas | South Pole 1911-2011
America Amundsen was first mate on a Belgian expedition led by Baron Adrian de Gerlache Belgica originally a Norwegian sealer named Patria was heading for Antarctica It was aboard the Belgica first mate Amundsen would be initiated rather brutally into polar travel We will no doubt return to this topic later but a few details will suffice for now of the eighteen people on board three would perish of disease or accidents Several developed scurvy and everything might have gone terribly wrong if expedition physician Frederick Cook who later became famous had not forced the crew to eat fresh penguin meat But before they reached Antarctica and before they embarked on what would be the first overwintering by humans on that continent Belgica made a stop in the city where we are now Punta Arenas is the world s southernmost city with a population exceeding 100 000 Situated at 53 10 S it is about as far south of the equator as Hamburg is north But the crucial point for us is that this city is the gateway to Antarctica And it was to this city Amundsen came in December 1897 The multinational crew hailed from Belgium Poland Romania and the United States and there were also six Norwegians among them It was not a harmonious ship Two crew members signed off before they had even left Europe and during journey south along the Americas the cook was driven ashore apparently because of total incompetence The engineer was so difficult to get along with that he suffered the same fate shortly after Camaraderie on board can scarcely have improved after one night in Punta Arenas Amundsen wrote in his diary The three aforementioned individuals refuse to return to ship They are more or less intoxicated It took me all morning

  • At last! | South Pole 1911-2011
long Yes replies a seasoned Norwegian traveller from behind us That s why I always travel business class I m too old for anything else We all look rather enviously at our compatriot Imagine being able to stretch out fully and relax Close our eyes and sleep our way across the Atlantic We re all pretty exhausted after a few hectic days or weeks Funny how much needs to be done at the last minute And we had all had our parts to play in the celebration of Nansen s 150th birthday the day before But imagine going there with Fram mused someone at the security checkpoint Five months at sea from Kristiansand to Hvalbukta Four knots average speed 97 dogs shitting and howling and suffering in the tropical heat Seasickness Fram was designed for ice filled waters not for the Seven Seas The round hull that made her queen of the Arctic and Southern Oceans caused indescribable rolling and yawing on the open sea motion that resulted in terrible seasickness According to Ivar Fosheim who was on the second Fram expedition it was so terrible that for the first hour he was afraid he would die and the rest
